So they reboot everything and keep the basic premise of the movie. What about North American fans? Who cares about them, they'll go see it regardless if it was done with crusty sock puppets. that will just confuse Chinese audiences. Should the script work off of the existing universe? NAH, fuck that.

What do we do? what DO we do.Īll the CEO's standup and scream. The film will seem dated, the jokes won't be easy to translate, and nuances of the film will be lost on chinese audiences.

Releasing Ghostbusters into the Chinese Market now will never work. Imagine, a huge population of people that doesn't know what Star Wars is, or Ghostbusters, or Ferris Buellers Day off, or Breakfast Club, or Indiana Jones, or Back to the Future, etc. Hollywood literally salivated over this new market. Recently China began to lighten their rules and allow Western Movies to be shown. So Classic 70s and 80s and 90s movies never were shown in China. This is not just star wars, but this is affecting all of Hollywood.Ĭhina for many years banned Western movies from being played in Cinemas. The Chinese film industry is certainly still very inexperienced, and its films seldom fits the Western audience (and vice versa), but it's not simply because of their government. It's like telling an inside joke to a random person. A lot of movies nowadays also plays on the nostalgia factor, but that wouldn't work on audience who didn't experience it the first time. For example, individual heroism is not favored in China, if a movie is about a single person or two that save the world, it's probably going to be mocked as childish and naive. I think some of the challenges here are that 1) Western filmmakers are exceptionally good at the "freedom/liberty" related movies, but relatively less so in other types, but good movies in other topics often don't translate well across cultures that are so different, so it's hard to learn from for the Chinese filmmakers 2) the audience isn't very receptive to stuff that sell well here. The downside to this is that investors can only invest in limited projects due to content, and so you only see them in some of the poorer scripted international films. But there are tons of topics beyond "freedom and liberty" that filmmakers can explore. The government isn't helping in this regard, as they are quite restrictive on the type of content in the scripts. Obviously people in different country have different preference, and the Chinese film industry is still too young to fully grasp the taste of the global market. I can agree that the films aimed for international audience hasn't been great, but films aimed at local audience can often be quite decent, and nearly none of those are "eye candy nonsense". That was the direction I was hoping Star Wars would go in, but instead they seem focused on subverting expectations and creating bland, lifeless, forgettable characters. Take the MCU where every character has unique flaws and where everything is character based. I’m not the biggest Star Wars fan by any means but those ideas could’ve been something unique, instead every character outside of Kylo Ren feels so flat, boring, and one dimensional.

Looper was one hell of an emotional film and is better than anything JJ has made. Along with TFA, but TLJ was supposed to be BETTER. I go to the movies to feel something, but I felt nothing during TLJ.

I love ideas like Luke turning his back on the Jedi, Kylo and Rey developing a connection, Rey’s parents being no one.but they were executed in the most emotionless way possible. It has some wonderful ideas that were executed in the blandest of ways. There’s really nothing deep about the film at all. I wouldn’t call ‘The Last Jedi’ a challenging cinematic experience.
